A sombre mood engulfed Sidonge village in Samia District, Busia County, when two children drowned in River Sio during a fishing adventure.
The two cousins aged six and 13 met their death at around 11am yesterday when they were overpowered by strong currents in the swollen river following heavy rains.
According to the area assistant chief Lillian Wesonga, the boys were seated on the riverbank when one of the fishing lines was pulled into the river, probably by fish.
The Class Two boy lost balance and fell into the river. “In desperation, his cousin decided to try and save him but unfortunately both couldn’t make it out of the river,” said Ms Wesonga.
She said another group of children who were also fishing nearby called for help. By the time of going to press none of the bodies had been found.
