The Nigerian Ambassador to Spain and widow of former Biafran leader, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, Mrs Bianca Ojukwu has revealed how her late husband and leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike made Rochas Okorocha Imo State governor. Ambassador Ojukwu droped the hint while addressing assemblage of Igbos in Lagos and othe ethnic nationalities as part of activities marking the first posthumous birthday of her late husband, Ojukwu.
According to her, the emergence of Governor Okorocha as the candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) during the governorship electoion in Imo State was discused and concluded in her house with Chief Uwazuruike as the anchor man. She recalled how the MASSOB leader, who was released from prison was invited by the late Ojukwu to their Enugu residence to discuss the future of Imo State.
“I recall how Ezeigbo invited Chief Uwazuruike to our house in Enugu after visiting him in the prison in Owerri, he was saddened that Uwazuruike could be detained right inside his own home, I remember how he asked him (Uwazuruike) to bring any candidate he thought would be better and he brought Rochas to Ojukwu who initially tried to reject him, but after so many insistence by Uwazuruike, Rochas was given the chance.” “My husband was already sick that he could not go to Owerri the day Rochas was received into our party, I was sent by my husband to go and receive him in Owerri, so this was how Uwazuruike and my husband made Rochas the governor of Imo state” she said.
The Nigerian Ambassador to Spain further expressed sadness that despite the role played by Chief Uwazuruike towards Igbo interests, a lot of Ndigbo still go behind to sabotage and truncate his efforts for the overall intrests of Ndigbo. She also recalled how her late husband, Dim Odumwgwu Ojukwu in one of their meetings with the MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike handed over the leadership of Ndigbo to Uwazuruike.
In his own testimonies, the National Coordinator of Ethnic Nationalities, Chief Solomon Asemota further revealed how Ojukwu told him that Uwazuruike was a true Igbo man. “Chief Ralph Uwazuruike and I met several times when Ojukwu was alive, he introduced Uwazuruike as his beloved son whom he hoped the mantle of leadership of Ndigbo will fall on when he was gone to the world beyond.
He told me that Uwazuruike is a true Igbo man who refused all overtures from Oligarchs to be empowered and converted like so many young men” Chief Asemota advised other Igbo men to emulate Uwazuruike by shunning all sorts of monetary inducement to the detriment of their brothers and sisters.
