Maina still wanted – Police

Force Headquarters of the Nigerian Police in Abuja yesterday maintained that Chairman of the Pension Task Team (PTT), AbdulRasheed Maina, is still a wanted man, appealing to members of the public who have information that could lead to his arrest, to furnish the police.
This is coming just as Senate Wednesday warned that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, risks a vote of-no-confidence if he fails to carry out the warrant of arrest order of Maina, issued by Senate President David Mark to the IGP.
Mark had last month signed the warrant which the IGP allegedly failed to execute. Consequently, it has mandated its Committee on Police Affairs to summon him “to give reasons why he did not act on the warrant issued by the President of the Senate.” But Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, said the police were irrevocably committed to discharging their statutory responsibility or arresting Maina, and produce him before the Senate.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains irrevocably committed to finding him and as soon as we lay our hands on him, we will arrest him and take him before the Senate as had been mandated in that warrant of arrest,” Mba said. Mba, while answering reporters’ questions shortly after the commissioning of the Police Insurance Transit Camp, also denied reports that the embattled Maina was still going about with mobile police personnel and challenged anyone with such proof to come up with it.
He said, “if you are conversant with policing tradition, you will understand that the declaration of any person wanted is usually necessitated by a need.
“In this instant, he was declared wanted because he went into hiding and made it difficult for the force to execute a warrant of arrest that was legitimately issued on him.” According to him, “Maina has no police officer in his entourage to the best of my knowledge.
And again, media practitioners are responsible members of the society and if you recall the press release that we issued over declaring Maina a wanted man, we did say that if any citizen have information that could help us in executing that order, the person should please, pass that information to the appropriate authority. “So if you have information that could help us in executing this warrant of arrest, we will be glad to receive it from you.
On the issue of Maina taking the Senate to court over undue harassment, Mba, said, “we will not go into those things, those things have nothing to do with us, we will not be pulled into unnecessary controversies. “
But the point remains that the National Assembly represented by the Senate, has issued a warrant of arrest and that warrant has mandated us to arrest him and we are focusing on that task and we are irrevocably committed to discharging that statutory responsibilities,” he said.
