One of the women,
Boitumelo Basana (31) pleaded guilty to helping Pearl David (20) to commit an
abortion on November 17, 2016 at Phase Six.
The two were slapped with a
similar charge of procuring abortion.
In mitigation, David told
the court to have mercy upon her saying that the time she spent in jail after
she committed the offence has taught her a great painful lesson that she will
never repeat.
David pleaded with the
court not to send her to jail but at least give her any other sentence other
than jail.
“Since I was sent to jail,
I have become a God-abiding citizen and I will never repeat what I did,” said
David.
On the other hand, Basana
said the court should consider that she is a first offender and did not waste
time by agreeing to the offence.
“I am taking care of
orphans at home, one of which is having kidney complications.”
Asked by Basupi what she
used to assist David to abort, Basana said that she used a stick to help David
abort her child.
Said Basana when
asked by Basupi where she took the stick from: “Someone gave me the stick to
use to help David to abort her child.”
After Basana
answered, Basupi told her that photos that were taken from the crime scene show
that someone who was experienced in helping women to abort their children
designed the stick.
“The album shows
that the stick was designed in a way that was going to cause serious harm to
the head of the child after it was inserted in the woman’s genitals,” said
Basupi.
David shocked the
court when she revealed that she paid Basana P100 as deposit to help her abort
her child and had promised to give her another P100 if the abortion went well.
The court also
heard that David called the hospital after the abortion did not go as planned
which led to the accused’s arrest.
Chimbisana Sechele
represented the state in the matter.
The duo is due in
court on February 20 for sentencing.
